ME AND MY BEST FRIEND, PETER BAGGE!

“If you like giant monsters, AND Doris Danger, then how could you possibly not LOVE Doris Danger Giant Monster Stories? Answer: You Couldn’t!” – Peter Bagge

Considering what best friends we are, I feel like I actually haven’t spent that much time with Peter! I commissioned his pin-up from him online, by email, in 2005, before meeting him! Our most lengthy visit was probably the Zoom interview I did with him in 2020.

Back in 2007, my then-one-year-old son and I met Peter briefly at Seattle’s Emerald City Comic-Con. This photo documented that historic first meeting, and we spoke briefly about both being musicians and that was about all the conversation we had.

Shortly after (same year), our paths crossed at Atlanta’s Dragon Con, where Peter was hustling past my table but paused briefly for a photo.  We then wound up on an indie comics creators panel together:

In 2010, we were both invited to design trading cards for Rochester Electronics’ electronics safety super hero, Captain Rochester. The company then hosted a thank-you dinner for its card contributors at Comic-Con in San Diego, and I wound up at a table with Peter and his wife, Joanne.  I hadn’t planned to go down to Comic-Con that year, but changed my mind so that I could enjoy being a part of this monumental dinner with a bunch of my favorite artists in the industry. (Below, Joanne, then Batton Lash, who saw photos were being taken and squatted down in the photo with us! – and Peter and myself.) Fun and memorable night!

ME AND MY BEST FRIEND, DAVE GIBBONS!

“A fantastic hoot! Great pin-ups too…” – Dave Gibbons

“I’ve had a full read now, rather than just a quick skim-through, and the opinion still stands.” – Dave Gibbons

I met Dave Gibbons at the Bristol Con UK in 2005! He was on my list of British comics creators I was eager to meet, hence the reason for traveling out to this show! I hunted him down and asked if he would draw me a giant monster pin-up that I could publish in my Doris Danger Comics! To my delight, he said yes.

That night, everyone was out at the bar of the hotel we were all staying at, and I timidly yearned to mingle with all these idols of mine. And my wife, Elizabeth, said, “C’mon, Chris, it’s no big deal to just say hi!” And since she didn’t read comics or know anyone and therefore felt no anxieties of “star-struckness,” she just jumped in and started talking with Dave, Brian Bolland, Liam Sharp, or Simon Bisley – about things besides comics! What a powerful tool I had in having her with me!

Dave later gave me a kind quote of endorsement for promotion, which I wrote about on page 000a Back Cover – Commentary:
