THE VENGEFUL SEARCH FOR MORE MONSTER PIN-UPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2\/11\/06<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At WonderCon, I had approached Thomas Yeates, and actually purchased a second pin-up from him.<span>  <\/span>Part of my logic with this was my overwhelming guilt for I singling him out in the collected Doris Danger  treasury that contained his first pin-up.<span>  <\/span>The title page discussed how to make the comic \u201cappropriate for all ages,\u201d and I joked at great length and in obsessive detail about all the creative ways the reader could edit Thomas&#8217;s gorgeous pin-up (containing a nude) so that the book would still be \u201call ages friendly.\u201d<span>  <\/span>But rather than just be upfront with him what I did, and then apologize, I wanted to get another pin-up from him.<span>  <\/span>He did this gorgeous jungle piece, so now I wanted him to do a jousting, knights of the round table type thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019d been thinking about re-approaching a couple other artists, who I\u2019d already gotten pin-ups from.<span>  <\/span>John Severin was the first who got my juices flowing.<span>  <\/span>I thought he did such a great Western pin-up, but he&#8217;s also known for his war comics.<span>  <\/span>Wouldn\u2019t that be fun to re-commission him for a war pin-up with a monster in it?<span>  <\/span>And then I thought, well, since I can\u2019t afford to keep paying Dick Ayers to ink the stories, maybe I could get a few pin-ups from him.<span>  <\/span>I could get a Western pin-up, and then something else of his choice.<span>  <\/span>Make him special, by including multiple pin-ups by him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So I was on this kick of artists who do different genres, and having them do different genres of monster pin-ups.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This sparked my imagination of other artists from the first volume who I\u2019d love to get second pin-ups from.<span>  <\/span>Of course I\u2019ve always fantasized about asking Gilbert Hernandez to do a full five-page story for me.<span>  <\/span>Then I pictured Tony Millionaire doing an intricate architecturally involved giant monster, since he does gorgeous architectural line drawings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And this brings us to this week.<span>  <\/span>I don\u2019t know why I didn\u2019t think of it sooner.<span>  <\/span>I realized, Shit!<span>  <\/span>If I\u2019m going to ask other people for pin-ups, ask your favorites.<span>  <\/span>What do you have to lose?<span>  <\/span>They\u2019ll just say no, and I can move on, knowing at least I asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I immediately sent emails to Mike Mignola and Mike Allred.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019ve been calling Sam Kieth as well, but haven\u2019t heard from him yet.<span>  <\/span>Mike and Mike got back to me immediately, and shocked me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mignola said no way\u2026 \u2026 he\u2019s way too busy\u2026 and he can\u2019t believe my boldness\u2026 but he REALLY wants to do another!<span>  <\/span>Check with him in a few months!<span>  <\/span>Fuck me!<span>  <\/span>What a fucking thrill!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I had hoped to see Mike Allred at Wondercon, but we didn\u2019t hook up.<span>  <\/span>His wife Laura had seen Mario Hernandez sitting at my table, so I was able to give Mike a copy of my oversize treasury through her, with his previous pin-up in it.<span>  <\/span>He was real sweet emailing a reply.  He said what a great format it was, and that he thought the book was great.<span>  <\/span>So I felt hopeful about a response from him regarding another pin-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Allred writes back the next day, saying I caught him in a good mood.<span>  <\/span>He wrote, quote: \u201cToo much fun to pass up.<span>  <\/span>The format is swell and the company is super cool.\u201d<span>  <\/span>Bless you, Mike Allred!<span>  <\/span>He\u2019s says he\u2019s currently working on a Madman monster story, so he\u2019s in the right frame of mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Hot damn!<span>  <\/span>DAMN!<span>  <\/span>Here I am, just throwing out maverick invites, because I\u2019m an invading, annoying little punk with no boundaries, assuming these guys will simply not bother to write back at all, and what happens?<span>  <\/span>I learn a valuable lesson.<span>  <\/span>Be audacious, rude, and brash, because it PAYS OFF!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Editor\u2019s note:<span>  <\/span>I only moderately, jokingly believe in this.<span>  <\/span>Don\u2019t be rude to your idols, fans!<span>  <\/span>Use tact and common sense!<span>  <\/span>Otherwise, people will just think you\u2019re an asshole, and word will spread in this tiny community!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2\/11\/06 At WonderCon, I had approached Thomas Yeates, and actually purchased a second pin-up from him.
