“The Empire of Light<\/strong> (French: L’Empire des lumi\u00e8res) is the title of a succession of paintings by Ren\u00e9 Magritte<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup> They depict the paradoxical image of a nocturnal landscape beneath a sunlit sky.[2]<\/a><\/sup> He explored the theme in 27 paintings (17 oil paintings and 10 gouaches<\/a>) from the 1940s to the 1960s.”<\/em> (from Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s a helpful tidbit about the (confusing translation for the) series title, as explained by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art<\/a> for their 2018 Magritte exhibit: “The French title, L\u2019empire des lumi\u00e8res, <\/em>is ambiguous in translation, becoming either \u201cempire\u201d or \u201cdominion.\u201d In our catalogue, Sandra Zalman discusses the distinction: \u201cWhile an empire exists in relation to a ruler, a dominion does not necessarily require this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
